Plot of the Film – Anyone But You
Bea, a driven law student at Boston University, crosses paths with Ben, a Goldman Sachs employee, at a coffee shop. Sparks fly, and they hit it off instantly, spending the entire day together. The evening ends with them falling asleep on Ben’s couch. The next morning, Bea slips out quietly, but soon has second thoughts and decides to return. However, when she arrives back at Ben’s apartment, she overhears him making unkind remarks about her to his friend, Pete, unaware that Ben is actually hurt by her abrupt exit. Feeling betrayed, Bea leaves without confronting him.
Six months later, fate brings Bea and Ben together again when Bea’s sister, Halle, starts dating Claudia, Pete’s sister. Tensions flare as both Bea and Ben remain icy, each convinced the other was at fault for their disastrous first date. Things take a dramatic turn when Halle and Claudia announce their engagement and plan a wedding in Sydney, forcing Bea and Ben to face their unresolved feelings.
Bea, now single after breaking up with her fiancé Jonathan and secretly dropping out of law school, is less than thrilled to discover she’ll be sharing a roof with Ben at Claudia and Pete’s parents’ house in the days leading up to the wedding. Their mutual disdain quickly wears on the nerves of the rest of the wedding party, and tensions escalate even further when both of their exes—Jonathan and Margaret—unexpectedly show up, adding fuel to the fire.
The wedding attendees hatch a plan to push Bea and Ben together, hoping it will smooth over tensions and ensure the wedding goes off without a hitch. Sensing the scheme, Bea strikes a deal with Ben: they’ll pretend to be a couple. This will not only make Margaret jealous but also keep Bea’s parents from pressuring her to get back with Jonathan.
Their initial attempts at faking the relationship fall flat, until a boat party where they share a dance and humorously reenact the famous Titanic scene. The moment ends with Bea tumbling into Sydney Harbour, and Ben heroically jumping in after her. While waiting on a buoy for rescue, Bea confides that she has dropped out of law school, and they make plans for a sightseeing date at the Sydney Opera House. Later, they return to the house and sleep together, but Bea casually remarks that her recent choices, including this one, may have been mistakes, leaving Ben disappointed. The next morning, he quietly leaves, leaving Bea feeling disheartened.
On the morning of the wedding, Ben inadvertently spills the beans to Bea’s parents about her quitting law school, leaving her feeling utterly betrayed. Meanwhile, after overhearing Halle and Claudia in a heated argument, Ben persuades Bea to put on a show of reconciliation to keep the wedding drama-free. The ceremony goes off without a hitch—until Bea catches Margaret kissing Ben.
Heartbroken, she flees to the Opera House in tears. Unbeknownst to her, Ben rejects Margaret, confessing that he no longer has feelings for her. Encouraged by the wedding guests to go after Bea, Ben takes a dramatic leap off a cliff into the Pacific Ocean and persuades a rescue helicopter to fly him to the Opera House to win her back.
Ben confesses to Bea that he walked away because he was afraid their relationship might turn into another regret. In response, Bea admits that spending the night with him was the one thing she hasn’t regretted in a long time. With their feelings out in the open, they reconcile and return to the wedding reception as an official couple. To their surprise, Halle and Claudia reveal that their argument was staged to push them together. Meanwhile, Jonathan and Margaret find comfort in each other, striking up their own unexpected romance.
